Students of Rajshahi University (RU) staged a protest last night in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence following the death of a fellow mate who was crushed under a truck inside the university campus.

The university authorities have removed acting proctor Assistant Professor Leaket Ali from his post following the the incident.

A fourth-year student, Mahmud Habib Himel, of graphic design, crafts and history of the university’s arts department, was crushed to death and another injured as a truck ran over a motorcycle on the campus last night.

The decision was taken in response to the demands of agitating students over the Himel’s death.

The announcement was made by RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar in the presence of students in front of his residence at around 1:30am today.

The student was crushed under a truck in front of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall around 8:45 pm on Tuesday.

As the news spread, agitating students torched four vehicles including the truck and had been demonstrating in the campus and had blocked the Rajshahi-Dhaka Highway protesting the incident.
