The National Citizen Party (NCP) has demanded that the ‘Boat’ symbol be excluded from the Election Commission’s upcoming schedule due to the suspension of the Awami League’s registration.
At the same time, the NCP has submitted an application for the inclusion of the ‘Shapla’ (Water Lily) symbol in the electoral schedule.
Reiterating its longstanding demand for the reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC), the NCP has said there are no legal obstacles to granting them the Shapla symbol. The party warned that if the symbol is not allotted, it will respond politically. “There is no alternative to both the inclusion of Shapla and the restructuring of the EC,” the party stressed.
On Sunday, an NCP delegation met with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The delegation was led by Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, Chief Organiser for the Southern Region Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organiser for the Northern Region Sarjis Alam, Joint Convenor Khaled Saifullah, and Joint Member Secretary Advocate Zahirul Islam Musa.
Election Commissioner Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah and EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed were also present during the meeting, which lasted for over two hours from 11 a.m.
Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Election Commission has sent a vetted list of 115 election symbols — including newly proposed ones — to the Ministry of Law for final approval under the revised electoral guidelines.
