At least 49 individuals have been arrested in connection with the vandalism incidents during the pro-Gaza protests at some places across Bangladesh.

In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the chief adviser’s press wing also informed that two cases were filed in connection with these incidents.

Tens of thousands of students, professionals, and general people across Bangladesh held demonstrations throughout Monday as part of a global strike in solidarity with Gazans amid an escalating offensive by the Israeli military.

In some cities, including Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet and Bogura, demonstrators damaged some restaurants and shops for allegedly keeping Israeli products like Coca-Cola and owned by United States and Israel companies.

In social media, some videos showed that some people were looting shoes from Bata showroom.

The Tuesday’s statement by the chief adviser’s press wing reads that, ‘Bangladesh police have swiftly moved to take action over the violent and unlawful events that unfolded during the Pro-Gaza protests in several cities on Monday.’

The statement reads that these attacks and acts of vandalism were an affront to public safety and the rule of law.

‘As of now, at least 49 individuals have been arrested in connection with these incidents’, it reads, adding that two cases have been formally filed.

‘Further investigations are underway, and additional cases are being processed to be filed against those responsible for these reprehensible acts,’ it continued.

The statement also mentioned that the police conducted raids last night targeting the perpetrators.

The law enforcement agencies were also reviewing video footage captured during the protests to identify more individuals involved, the statement further read.

‘These operations will continue until all those responsible for this violence and destruction are apprehended,’ it added.
