Actor Siddique placed on 7-day remand in July uprising case

A Dhaka court today granted a 7-day remand for actor Siddiqur Rahman Siddique in connection with an attempted murder case of a van driver, Jabbar Ali Hawlader, in the anti-discrimination student movement in the Gulshan area.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sanaullah passed the order as the police sought a 10-day remand.

Earlier, on Tuesday (April 29) afternoon, a group of men, identifying themselves as ‘Jatiotabadi Chatradal’ members, assaulted actor Siddique while he was passing through Bailey Road. Then He was first taken to Ramna Police Station and later handed over to Gulshan Police Station.

According to the case statement, on July 19 last year, during the anti-discrimination movement, shots were fired at protesters in front of Confidence Tower in Shahjadpur, Gulshan. Jabbar Ali Hawlader, a van driver, was shot and injured in the incident.

Subsequently, Jabbar Ali filed a case at Gulshan Police Station against 109 people, including the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Mentionable, Siddique hails from Madhupur upazila in Tangail district. He attempted to secure nominations for the 2023 national election from the Dhaka-17 and Tangail-1 constituencies with the Awami League, as well as for the Dhaka-17 seat in a by-election, but was unsuccessful in both attempts.
