National Film Award-winning legendary actor Prabir Mitra passed away at 10:15pm at a hospital in the capital on Sunday while undergoing treatment. He was 84.

The actor’s son Sifat Islam confirmed the news of his demise to the media.

Prabir Mitra was admitted to a private hospital on 22 December for multiple complications. His health had continued to decline over the past two weeks, prompting his family to seek urgent government intervention for advanced medical treatment.

Prabir Mitra was born in Chandpur on 18 August 1941 to Gopendra Nayaran Mitra and Omiabala Mitra.

He got involved with stage acting when he was in class 7. After completing his education at Jagannath College (now Jagannath University), Prabir Mitra enrolled in the Institute of Statistical Research and Training Institute of Dhaka University.

Mitra debuted in film acting through “Jolchhobi” directed by H Akbar. He worked in over 400 films in his career.

The actor won his first National Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in the film “Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo” in 1982. His performance in the film “Nawab Sirajuddaula” (1989) was also acclaimed.

Some notable films acted by Mitra are – “Mayer Dabi”, “Dulari”, “Biyer Phul”, “Akash Chowa Bhalobasha”, “Madhumita”, “Dohon”, “Bhalobashlei Ghor Badha Jay Na”, “Talak”, “Maan Shomman”, “Rani Keno Dakat”, and “Nawab Sirajuddaula”.

Prabir Mitra starrer last movie was “Briddhashram” directed by SD Rubel.
