The district police in Rajshahi on Saturday night withdrew Charghat model police station officer-in-charge Mahbubul Alam after an audio clip of him seeking Tk 5 lakh bribe from the wife of an accused in a drug case went viral.

‘OC Mahbubul has been withdrawn and attached to Rajshahi Police Lines on Saturday night for the sake of investigation’, said Md Rofiqul Alam, additional superintendent of Rajshahi district police.

Earlier, an audio clip of Mahbubul went viral on social media on Saturday evening where the police official was heard asking a woman to pay him Tk 5 lakh for releasing her husband.

‘Your husband has not harmed me less. Bring Tk 5 lakh tomorrow. I have not given you a scratch yet’, Mahbubul said to the woman.

Mentioning that every police official in the district was taking money, Mahbubul also told the woman that the local lawmaker posted him there ahead of the next national parliamentary elections.

‘It takes a lot of money to run a police station. I have spoken to sir (superintendent of police). What he needs now is Tk 5 lakh. Another Tk 7 lakh is needed for the things sir has asked. I have told him that I will try as there is nothing but drugs in here,’ he said.

‘Can you pay me Tk 5 lakh? I will put them (local drug dealers) behind bars. You will do business (of drugs) from outside,’ Mahbubul also said.

However, Mahbubul was not available for his comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.
