22 detained following police–Jamaat clash in Chattogram

Police detained at least 22 people following a clash with leaders and activists of Jamaat-e –Islami over holding gayebana janaza for Jamaat leader and war crimes convict Delwar Hossain Sayedee at WASA intersection in Chattogram city Tuesday afternoon.

Identities of the detained ones are yet to be confirmed.

 

Police said that the Chattogram Jamaat in the morning announced to hold a gayebana janaza at WASA intersection after asr prayers on Tuesday and the party leaders and activists began to gather at the place.

As they had no prior permission to hold the programme on such a busy road there, police went there in the afternoon and requested the Jamaat activists to leave the place, they said.

At one stage, the Jamaat activists threw brick bats targeting the police personnel when police charged batons on the Jamaat activists and chasing and counter –chasing occurred between the Jamaat men and the police, said Md Jahidul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.

He said that they had so far arrested 22 people from the spot following the clash.

86-year-old Sayedee died at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in the capital Monday night in jail custody.
