Liberation war veteran Nur-E-Alam Siddiqui dies

Nur-E-Alam Siddiqui, who served as convener of Swadhin Bangla Kendriya Chhatra Sangram Parishad during the mass upsurge of 1969 and the War of Liberation in 1971, has passed away. He was 79.

The Liberation war veteran was a former lawmaker and former president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (1970-1972).

He died at 4:37am Wednesday while undergoing treatment at United Hospital in Bangladesh capital Dhaka, confirmed his press secretary Aniket Rajesh.

Prime minister Sheik Hasina and other cabinet members, in separate statements, expressed their deep shock at his death.

Nur-E-Alam Siddiqui was one of the organisers of independence, also known as one of the four prominent student leaders who the mass movement of 1969. He was one of the leaders of Mujib Bahini.

Nur-E-Alam Siddiqui played an active role in all the political activities of the time, including participation in the six-point movement, the 11-point movement, the language movement. He was elected MP from Jashore-2 constituency as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the first parliamentary election of 1973.

He contested from Jhenaidah-2 constituency as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 7th parliamentary elections of 1996 and 8th Jatiya Sangsad in 2001.
