Death toll hits 17 in C’nawabganj lightning strike

At least 17 people were killed in lightning strike at Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district on Wednesday noon.

The deceased could not be identified immediately. They all were participants from groom’s side of a marriage ceremony.

According to the locals, they were killed in strikes of a thunderbolt on their way to a wedding ceremony by boat.

 

Shibganj Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Farid Hossain confirmed the matter to media on Wednesday.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shakib Al Rabbi said the groom’s side was going to the bride’s house in Paka village of Shibganj’s Paka Union from Jantarhat in Narayanpur Union of Chapainawabganj Sadar.

“It started raining while they were crossing the river Padma. Then, they took shelter under a tin-shed roof in Telikhali area and waited for the rain to go away. At that time, lightning struck and left 17 dead on the spot. Among the dead 12 were men and five women” he added.

However, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Engineer Ariful Islam said 18 people were killed in the lightning strike.
