Khulna-Dhaka rail travel via Padma Bridge begins

The first ever rail communication on the Khulna-Dhaka route began on Tuesday dawn as a train carrying 553 passengers reached Kamalapur Railway Station via the Padma Bridge.

The Jahanabad Express reached its destination in nearly four hours after leaving Khulna at 6am. The train would leave for Khulna from Kamalapur Railway Station at 8pm and reach its destination at 9.45am. The train would serve passengers every day except Monday.

At 10.45pm the first Dhaka-Benapole direct train communication began as the Jahanabad Express left the Kamalapur station for Jashore with a different name: Ruposhi Bangla. The train is expected to reach Benapole at 2.30pm.

The Ruposhi Bangla train would return to Dhaka at 7.30pm and then as Jahanabad Express would leave Dhaka for Khulna half an hour later.

Bangladesh Railway Director General Afzal Hossain told reporters the fare for each passenger on the trains would be Tk445 for non-air conditioned (AC) second-class chairs, Tk851 for AC chairs and Tk1,018 for the top-rated AC seats.

By 6am Tuesday, 70% of the train’s 768 seats were sold out. Apart from its 11 passenger coaches, the train also has one cargo coach.

After leaving the Khulna station, the train would transit through Noapara, Singia, Lohagara, Kashiani and Bhanga before reaching Kamalapur in Dhaka. On the other hand, the train from Benapole would transit through Jashore Junction, Narail, Kashiani and Bhanga before reaching Kamalapur.
