Six people, including a former upazila parishad chairman, were injured in an attack by supporters of the current upazila chairman over the establishment of an election office for the upcoming upazila parishad elections in Jashore’s Sharsha upazila.
The incident occurred around 9:00pm on Wednesday when former chairman of Goga union parishad Abdur Rashid tried to use a rented shop as the election office for upazila chairman candidate Soharab Hossain.
According to police and local sources, the shop was previously captured and locked by current UP chairman Tabibur Rahman’s supporters.
When Rashid and his supporters broke into the shop, they came under attack by Tabibur’s supporters.
Among the injured are Abdur Rashid, 60, Union Juba League general secretary Jasim Uddin, 44, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, 40, Abdul Wahab, 45, and Idris, 45.
They are currently receiving treatment at Sharsha Upazila Health Complex.
Abdur Rashid said, ‘Seeing the growing public support for us, Tabibur and his gang could not tolerate it and launched a sudden attack on us. Six of my supporters and I were seriously injured.’
Police arrested one people in connection with the attack and increased security in the area, said Nishat Al Nahiyan, senior ASP of Navaron Circle.
Efforts to arrest other suspects are ongoing, he added.
