Police submit charge sheets in 12 cases

Police on Friday said that they had recently submitted charge sheets in 12 cases filed over murders and other charges during the 2024 July uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian regime on August 5 in the year.

Of them, three were murder cases and nine on other charges, said a press release of the Police Headquarters issued on Friday afternoon.

According to the charge sheets, all three murder cases are from Sherpur district, the PHQ release said.

Md Aminul islam, Sherpur district superintendent of police, told New Age that the charge sheets of the murder cases were submitted to the court on June 30 and all the cases had been filed with the Sherpur Sadar police station.

‘All the accused in the three charge sheets are Awami League leaders and activists of Sherpur. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina or any high-profile Awami League leaders were not accused in the cases,’ the SP added.

The cases on other charges include one in Dhaka Metropolitan Police area, one in Barishal Metropolitan Police area, three in Chapainawabganj district, two in Sirajganj while two were investigated by the Police Bureau of Investigation, the release added.

PHQ assistant inspector general for Media and Public Relations Enamul Haque Sagar, however, could not confirm the timeframe about the submission of charge sheets in these cases.

‘The incidents took place during the student-mass uprising and the cases were filed after August 5, 2024,’ Enamul told New Age.

The PHQ said that high officials were supervising the cases over crimes during the July uprising to ensure fair investigation.

According to a government gazette, 844 people were killed during the mass uprising.

The ousted prime minister and AL president, Sheikh Hasina, herself ordered security forces to kill protesters and hide their bodies to quell the student-led protests in July 2024 in Bangladesh, according to a report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights released on February 12.

Based on deaths reported by various credible sources, the report estimated that as many as 1,400 people might have been killed between July 1 and August 15 in 2024, and thousands were injured, the vast majority of whom were shot by Bangladesh’s security forces, said the report.

Sheikh Hasina fled to India for shelter on August 5, 2024 and Professor Muhamamd Yunus-led interim government took over on August 8.
