NBR officials’ movement was unacceptable: Finance adviser

Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed has stated that the recent movement by the staff and officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) was deemed unacceptable, resulting in a significant financial loss to the country.

He said that, as government officials, they cannot engage in such activities, adding that the government will refrain from taking action if they work transparently from now on.

While talking to reporters in Dhaka on Monday, the finance adviser said the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has begun an investigation into the irregularities against six NBR officials on its own initiative.

He said normalcy returned to the tax administration as the agitating staff and officers lent their hands to their respective duties, postponing their movement.

Such a type of protest should never be initiated for the sake of the national interest, he said, expressing optimism that they would work, upholding their unbiased professionalism.

The NBR officials on Sunday withdrew their nationwide shutdown, considering the greater interests of trade and commerce and the country’s overall economy.

Hasan Mohammad Tarek Rikabder, president of the NBR Reforms Oikko Parishad, announced the decision at a press conference after a meeting with the country’s leading businessmen at the office of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) in Dhaka.

Normalcy returned to the NBR as all officials resumed their duties on Monday, showing a positive step toward achieving the current fiscal year’s revenue collection target.
