Patients suffer as no services at national eye hospital for 4th day

Shawdesh Desk:

Hundreds of eye patients were left in distress as the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in the capital’s Agargaon remained closed to treatment for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday.

The facility remained padlocked as doctors and nurses suspended all medical services following a tripartite clash on Wednesday morning, when a group of injured July protesters receiving treatment allegedly attacked hospital staff.

However, the hospital authorities have yet to confirm when medical services will resume.

The eye hospital typically serves around 2,000 outpatients and emergency cases daily, with approximately 60 patients admitted each day.

Hospital operations have remained suspended since the incident, with no doctors, nurses, or staff reporting for duty on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

With no doctors or nurses on duty, new patients arriving from across the country were forced to return without treatment, while many follow-up patients also left unattended.

On 28 May, injured victims of the July movement allegedly assaulted doctors and staff at the hospital for reported medical negligence.

However, none of the individuals injured in the 2024 mass uprising have left the hospital. Around 70 of them continue to receive treatment at the facility.

A hospital nurse said that currently, only the injured from the July uprising remain admitted.

However, doctors and nurses soon halted work, citing security concerns.

Doctors and nurses at the hospital alleged that the injured patients frequently behaved rudely toward them.

Khair Ahmed Choudhury, the hospital’s director, said some doctors and nurses were injured on Wednesday.

“We were sympathetic to the mental state of the July protesters despite some troubling incidents. However, the recent attack on doctors and staff has left them feeling unsafe. As a result, many are unwilling to come to the hospital,” he said.
The July victims denied the allegations, stating they were protesting hospital irregularities and negligence.

They claimed the authorities have failed to provide proper treatment and are involved in multiple malpractices.
