Capital comes to a halt as political gatherings trigger massive traffic jams

Shawdesh Desk:

The capital, Dhaka, came to a complete halt on Wednesday as the simultaneous gathering of two political parties triggered massive traffic jams.

Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal and Swechchhasebak Dal, three key associate bodies of the BNP, held a rally at its Nayapaltan headquarters this noon, demanding the political rights of the youth.

Besides, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami held a rally at the city’s busiest intersection, Shahbagh, setting up a roadside stage to accord a reception to its recently released top leader, ATM Azharul Islam.

Lakhs of leaders and activists from various fronts and associate bodies of the BNP arrived in Dhaka by buses and trucks from nearby areas, including Gazipur, Narayanganj, Manikganj, and Comilla, to join the youth rally today.

Thousands of BNP followers also thronged the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters by different modes of vehicles to make the rally successful.

Meanwhile, a large number of people gathered at the Shahbagh intersection to welcome Azharul Islam, a former death row convict recently acquitted of the charge related to the crimes against humanity committed during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.

Both the political gatherings triggered massive traffic jams in and around the capital, plunging the commuters into an acute crisis, according to police and commuters.
