Babar acquitted in illegal arms possession case

Shawdesh desk:

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday acquitted BNP’s senior leader Lutfuzzaman Babar in an illegal arms possession case.

Justice Mostofa Zaman Islam acquitted the former home minister, terming the trial court’s guilty verdict as “illegal.”

On 27 May 2007, during the tenure of army-backed caretaker government, the joint forces arrested Babar from his residence.

Seven days later, an illegal arms possession case was filed with the Gulshan Police Station. On 30 October that year, the Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal gave Babar 17 years in prison.

On Wednesday, Babar’s lawyer said that the case statement mentioned the presence of an unlicensed revolver in a red-black bag. However, in the seized items list, no such bag was mentioned. The case was ill-intended, the lawyer told reporters.
