Govt expresses concern attack over women’s football matches

Shawdesh Desk:

Referring to the Tuesday’s attacks over women’s football matches in Jaipurhat and Dinajpur districts, the interim government on Thursday expressed its deep concern by reports of incidents of women being prevented from engaging in recreational activities.

‘Anyone who imposes their restrictions on girls and women in violation of their rights will be held accountable for their actions according to the laws of Bangladesh,’ the chief adviser’s press wing said in a statement on Thursday.

‘We specifically condemn the actions of hooligans who have forcefully disrupted girls’ football matches. Women are equal citizens of Bangladesh and enjoy the same human and civil rights as men. The IG is doing everything in his power to ensure that they enjoy their full rights as Bangladeshi citizens,’ said the statement.

It said that the interim government would take stern actions against any attempt to discriminate against or oppress any group of citizens.

The Chief Adviser’s Office has ordered district administrations in Dinajpur and Joypurhat to take the necessary steps to resume the stalled football matches, the statement added.

‘The district administrators told us that they recently organised women football, cricket, and kabaddi matches in their districts. Hundreds of people watched the matches, and they were appreciated by all sections of people in their districts,’ the statement said.

On Tuesday afternoon, at least four people were injured in a clash between two groups over a Women’s football match at the Bawna area near Hilli, a bordering area under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur district and the tournament remained suspended following the incident, according to the police.

In another incident on Tuesday, local people, madrassah teachers and students vandalised tin-made fences on Tilakpur High School playground under Akkelpur upazila in Jaipurhat, a day before the scheduled match for women football players.

Last week, Professor Yunus met with FIFA chief Gianni Infantino and sought his support to build infrastructure and facilities for women footballers in Bangladesh, said the CA press wing statement.
