A Bangladeshi youth was injured as the Indian Border Security Force opened fire targeting a group of Bangladesh nationals along the Telkupa border area under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on early Saturday.
The injured, Habil Uddin, 30, of village Bagachipara, was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Sankar K Biswas, the in-charge of RMCH emergency department, said that the victim’s family members took bullet injured Habil to the hospital at about 11:00am.
‘Habil has received a bullet in his back and needed to undergo an immediate surgery at the hospital as his condition is somewhat critical,’ he added.
Habil told New Age that the BSF personnel opened fire on him when he went to water his wheat field in the Telkupi border area at about 5:30am.
The 59th BGB battalion commander lieutenant colonel Golam Kibria said that BSF personnel opened fire after a group of eight Bangladeshi youth had illegally entered India for a smuggling attempt, leaving Habil injured.
According to human rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra, at least 25 Bangladeshis were shot to death by the BSF members, while 25 others were injured between January and December in 2024.
