Willing to mediate on Kashmir issue if both countries want: Donald Trump to Imran Khan

Shawdesh Desk: US President Donald Trump on Monday told Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan that he is willing to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir situation if both countries want the same, reports India Today.

The US president’s statement is a blow to Imran Khan, who is hoping to garner support from the international community against India’s decision to scrap Article 370.

In a media briefing, Trump said, “I am ready, willing and able. It’s a complex issue. It’s been going on for a long time. But if both want it, I will be ready to do it.”
Trump went on to say that he would want to see “everything workout” between India and Pakistan, who have been engaged in a diplomatic tussle since the Narendra Modi-led government abrogated Article 370.

“Surely I want to see everything work out. I hope India and Pakistan can come together,” Trump said.

While Imran Khan said that India is refusing to talk on the matter, Donald Trump said he can only help if there is “consent from the other side”.

Donald Trump admitted that Narendra Modi had made an aggressive statement on Kashmir and Article 370 during the ‘Howdy, Modi’ event, but added that it was well-received by the crowd.

Trump also mentioned that he shares a “very good relationship” with India, evident from the statement made by the US president at yesterday’s mega event in Houston, Texas.

Ahead of the one-on-one talks, the US president also told Imran Khan that “he lives in a very friendly neighbourhood” when the Pakistan prime minister said he looks forward to talking about Afghanistan, India and Iran.

While Imran Khan is trying hard to seek support from the international community to back its Kashmir stance, Trump’s comments indicate that he will not act without India’s approval.

India has already informed the international community that the abrogation of Article 370 was not in violation of the Indian Constitution and even explained the benefits of the move. Many world leaders backed India’s stance and agreed that it is an internal matter.
