Shawdesh Desk;
A former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of Awami League, was beaten to death by local people in Rajshahi on early Sunday.
The deceased, Abdullah Al Masud, 35, was a former assistant secretary of BCL Rajshahi University unit.
SM Masud Pervez, officer-in-charge of Boalia Model Police Station, told New Age that about 100 to 150 ‘chaotic people’ detained Abdullah Al Masud in Binodpur area, adjacent to the Rajshahi University, and beat him up on Saturday night on charges of attacking on students on August 5.
‘Later they brought him to the police station. When the agitating locals were staging demonstrations in front of the police station demanding Masud’s trial, we rescued him with the help of army personnel and sent him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital,’ he said.
The police official said that Masud, also a section of officer at Rajshahi University, died from his injuries at about 12:30am while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
He said that they would take legal actions in this connection if the family members of the deceased lodged any complaint with the police station.
Earlier, while lying at Boalia police station, Masud, who became the father of a daughter on August 3, told journalists that he went to Binodpur area to buy medicine.
‘They (locals) detained and beat me as I used to do be involved with Chhatra League. My right leg was amputated and both hands and legs’ tendons were cut off in 2014. I stopped doing Chhatra League politics a long time ago,’ he added.
Earlier in 2014, a group of miscreants detached the right leg of Masud from his body and cut off the tendons of his legs and hands on Rajshahi University campus.
The then BCL leaders blamed Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir men for the attack on Masud.
In January 2023, Masud was appointed as a store officer at Rajshahi University Medical Centre with the rank of section officer, following a directive issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
