Hasina, Rehana among 87 sued in Sylhet

A case has been filed against 87 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, for opening fire on protesting students and civilians during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Sylhet.

Zuber Ahmed, acting president of the Sylhet district Chhatra Dal filed the case with the 1st Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate and Speedy Trial Court on Wednesday.

According to the case statement, on 4 August, students and people from various professions organized a peaceful protest rally in the Bandar Bazar area of Sylhet city. During the rally, it is alleged that police, along with leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, fired shots and attacked the protesters.

Other accused in the case include former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former Law Minister Anisul Huq, Sheikh Hasina’s former Private Industry and Investment Affairs Adviser Salman F Rahman, former MP Kamrul Islam, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Hasanul Haque Inu, Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon, former IGP Abdullah Al Mamun, former DB chief Harun-ur-Rashid, former Sylhet Mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, former Sylhet-3 MP Habibur Rahman Habib, former MP Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, former Chairman of Sylhet District Council and General Secretary of Sylhet District Awami League Nasir Uddin Khan, Sylhet City Councillor Azadur Rahman Azad, and president and secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan Chhatra League.

Additionally, some 500-600 unidentified individuals have also been named as accused in the case.

So far, four cases have been filed in Sylhet in connection with the casualties from the attack on the quota reform movement.
