Students’ blockade snaps rail link between Dhaka, rest of Bangladesh

Rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh were snapped Thursday afternoon as students demanding quota reform in government jobs blocked the rail track at Mohakhali area in the capital.

Ferdous Ahmed Biswas, officer-in-charge of Dhaka railway police station, situated at Kamalapur, said that quota protesters blocked the rail track at Mohakhali area in the city.

‘Since then, the train movement from and to the capital remained suspended, ‘ he added.

A ‘complete shutdown’ called by Anti-discrimination Student Movement was underway with protesters blocking roads and highways in Dhaka and other places across the country since Thursday morning.

No city service bus was seen running in the capital city Dhaka since Thursday morning.

No long-route buses left Dhaka on the day from three inter-district bus terminals.

Following the student protests for quota reform, the highways surrounding the city — Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Chattogram and Dhaka-Aricha were being blocked at different entry points.
