Sylhet city submerges for 6th time this monsoon due to heavy rainfall

Shawdesh Desk:

Due to continuous heavy rains and mountain torrents from India, Sylhet has submerged for the sixth time this monsoon. Since Monday night, various parts of the city have been experiencing waterlogging.

Besides, rising water levels in all major rivers in the region have resulted in potential flood situations in areas including Gowainghat, Companiganj, and Jaintapur.

The Meteorological Department reported that Sylhet received 294 millimeters of rain in the 25 hours from 6 am Monday to 7 am Tuesday.

Numerous roads and homes in various areas of Sylhet city, including Mirzajangal, Manipuri Rajbari, Taltola, Jamtola, Kuarpar, Shibganj, Shahjalal Uposhohor, Hawapara, Jatarpur, Mendibagh, Topkhana, Majumdari, Choukidekhi, and South Surma, have been submerged. Residents of the city are facing significant difficulties due to this waterlogging.

Himangshu Chandra Shil, a resident of Jamtola, said, “I have lost count of how many times my home has been flooded this season. Each time the water rises, we leave and take shelter at relatives’ homes.”

Nabbir Hossain, a resident of Shahjalal Uposhohor, said that even a small amount of rain causes flooding in their area, making it impossible to stay on the ground floor of their homes.

Meanwhile, water levels in four points of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet have exceeded danger levels.

According to the Water Development Board (BWDB) in Sylhet, the water level of the Surma River at the Kanaighat point was flowing 118 centimetres above the danger level at 9 am on Tuesday.

Besides, the Kushiyara River’s water levels at Amalsid, Sheola, Sherpur, and Fenchuganj points have exceeded danger levels. The water level of the Sari River at Gowainghat Point has also crossed the danger mark.

“Heavy rainfall in Cherrapunji of India poses a threat to Sylhet. Cherrapunji received 500 millimetres of rain in the 48 hours leading up to 6pm on Monday, with more rain expected. Moreover, there is a likelihood of heavy rainfall in Sylhet itself,” Deepak Ranjan Das, the executive engineer of Sylhet BWDB told the Daily Sun.
