NYC public school calendar includes lots of time off in April: Here’s what parents need to know

Shawdesh Desk:

New York City public school students shouldn’t expect a great deal of instruction during the month of April, thanks to a slew of days off, including spring break, and time allocated for state exams and test prep.

Students return to campus on Tuesday, April 2, after a four-day weekend for Easter. They then have a day off on Wednesday, April 10, for Eid al-Fitr.

Spring break kicks off just a week later. The last day of classes before spring break for public schools is Friday, April 19. Students will return to campus on Wednesday, May 1 — for a total of 11 days off from school, including weekends.

With spring break and two more days off from Easter weekend and Eid al-Fitr — students are only in school buildings for 13 days in April.
Students in grades 3-8 might have even less instructional time if they are preparing and taking state exams this month. Paper-based testing for English language arts exam will be held from April 11-12, and computer-based testing will be held from April 11-19.
Math state exams will be held in May — with paper-based testing from May 7-8, and computer-based from May 7-17.
The last day of school for public students in New York City is Wednesday, June 26.
