SL leader loses hand for protesting at JL leader’s toll collection

Gffargaon Swechchhasebak League leader’s left hand was amputated in the capital Tuesday, a day after he was struck with machetes near his village home by a local Juba League leader and his followers Monday evening.

The victim, Ilias Noman, 30, son of Siraj Uddin of village Jashra, Gafargaon, Mymensingh was hacked by local ward Juba League president Sarwar Jahan Dhonu and his followers for protesting money collection by Sarwar from villagers promising they would be provided with  Palli Bidyut Samity’s power supply connections.

Ilias is now under treatment at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics Research in the capital after amputating his left arm.

Doctors told New Age that Ilias was admitted to NITOR with serious injuries on his head and left arm and injuries all over his body.

They said that his left arm was amputated and that he was bleeding profusely for which he was not yet out of danger.

Locals and the police said, on Monday at about 6:15pm, a group of five to six persons hacked Ilias near Jashra Ayesha Hasan Dakhil Madrassah, when he was on his way home from the bazaar.

The attackers fled the spot after leaving him in a pool of blood, they said.

Neighbours and family members rushed the spot, after hearing him cry out for help, rescued him and took him to Gafargaon Upazila Health Complex from where he was sent to NITOR at night.

Gaffargaon police said that Ilias’ wife Mahmuda Akhter lodged a case naming local ward Juba League president Sarwar Jahan Dhonu and eight others and 10 unnamed attackers.

Police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Abdul Ahad Khan said that they arrested Sarwar and sent him to court that sent him to jail.

He said that a manhunt was on to arrest the other suspects.

Asked about the reason behind the attack, the OC that an investigation was on.

Villagers held a protest rally at Bakhura-Daulatpur Mor Bazaar demanding immediate arrest of and exemplary punishments to the  attackers.

Tofail Ahmed, a neighbour of the victim, alleged that Sarwar collected money from the villagers several months ago assuring them to provide the electricity connections.

He said that Ilias asked Sarwar to return the villagers money as he did not provide the power connections for which he came under attack from Sarwar and his cohorts.
