Shawdesh Desk:
The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a lake effect snow warning for parts of the Rochester region.
The warning will be in effect from late tonight through Thursday night and covers Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties.
Heavy lake effect snow is expected, with total accumulations ranging from 6 to 9 inches in the areas most affected by persistent lake snow bands, according to the Weather Service.
Wind gusts up to 50 mph will accompany the snow, leading to extensive blowing and drifting snow. Near blizzard conditions may occur intermittently, according to the Weather Service.
Travel conditions will be highly challenging, with significantly reduced visibility due to areas of blowing snow. The morning commute on Thursday is expected to be particularly affected, according to the Weather Service. Those traveling should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions and low visibilities.
A high wind watch has also been issued for several counties in the Rochester region. The wind watch will be in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning in Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston and Ontario counties.
West winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are possible in those areas, according to the Weather Service. The predicted strong wind could cause damage to trees and power lines, leading to scattered power outages.
Travel may be challenging, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
