2-acre hemp cultivated land destroyed in Khagrachhari

Police in a drive seized two acres cultivated land and destroyed the largest-ever haul of hemp at Guimara upazila in Khagrachhari district on Tuesday afternoon.
The law enforcers claimed that they have burned down a total of 30,000 kilograms of hemp, cultivated at two acres land in remote hilly Chowdhuripara area under the upazila.

However, no one was arrested during the drive.
Superintendent of Khagrachhari police Mukta Dhar said acting on a tip-off, an operational team of police conducted a special drive in the area, 15 kilometers away from the Guimara residential area, and seized the hemp being cultivated on around two acres of land.

Later, around 30,215 kilograms of hemp were destroyed in presence of senior judicial magistrate Faridul Alam, she said.

The remaining 15 kilograms hemp have been preserved as a sample.

“Estimating the price of one kg of marijuana at Tk 10,000, the total price of the destroyed drugs stands at Tk 30.25 crore,” said Mukta.

“Police suspected there people, responsible for this cultivation and efforts are on to arrest them,” added the SP.
