In a recent survey, a staggering 22.36% of the rural population grapples with moderate to severe food insecurity, revealing a stark contrast with urban areas reporting a relatively lower rate of 18.37%.
The survey, titled “Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2022,” conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), was unveiled today.
The overall national average for food insecurity stands at a concerning 21.1%, signaling a pervasive challenge faced by a significant portion of the population. The survey, based on respondents’ perceptions and judgments, provides a comprehensive snapshot of the country’s food security landscape.
Encouragingly, the data also indicates progress in Bangladesh’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2, ‘Zero Hunger,’ by 2030.
The report notes a decline in severe food insecurity, with 11.3% of the population experiencing this category of concern.
As policymakers and stakeholders delve into the implications of this data, attention is likely to turn towards targeted interventions and strategies aimed at addressing the root causes of food insecurity, particularly in rural communities.
The findings underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure that no segment of the population is left behind in the pursuit of a hunger-free Bangladesh.
