Garments Shramik Shamhati general secretary Babul Hossain, also a readymade garment workers’ leader in the ongoing movement for wage hike, went missing on Tuesday evening.
Garments Shramik Shamhati leader Taslima Akhter, in a statement issued on Wednesday, demanded safe return of Babul.
In the statement, she said that the State authorities was trying to suppress the workers’ protests for wage hike though creating a horrifying situation through enforced disappearance of the workers’ leader.
She urged the authorities concerned to ensure safe return of Babul to his family and accept the workers’ demand of wage hike.
Garments Shramik Shamhati would hold a press conference at its office in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon demanding safe return of Babul, the statement read.
According to the statement, Babul left his house in Ashulia area on Tuesday evening. He was going to Gazipur to meet with the families of the victim workers who were killed in police violence during the RMG workers’ movement.
The family last talked to him over mobile phone at about 7:00pm and he told them that he boarded on a Gazipur-bound bus.
He did not return his house at night and his phone remained switched off, the family said.
