A suspected drug peddler and robber died in separate ‘gunfights’ with members of law enforcement agencies in Chuadanga and Chattogram on early Friday.

In Chuadanga, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between two groups of drug peddlers and police at village Joyrampur Kathaltala of Damurhuda upazila in Chuadanga on early Friday.

The deceased was Rokonuzzaman Rokon, 35, son of Abu Bakkar Siddique, a resident of the upazila.

Damurhuda police station officer-in-charge Sukumar Biswas told New Age that a team of Damurhuda police raided the area when two groups of drug peddlers were exchanging bullets there at around 2:30am for establishing supremacy.

Sensing the presence of the police team, the drug peddlers opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered the gunfight, he said adding that after the gunfight, police found Rokon’s bullet-hit body while the other gang members managed to flee the scene.

Later, Rokon was taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital where on the duty doctors declared him dead.

He was wanted in at least 10 criminal cases including of drugs, Sukumar claimed.

They also recovered a locally made gun, two cartridges, one sack of Phensidyl and two sharp weapons from the spot, the OC added.

In Chattogram, a suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion at East Chambol in Bashkhali upazila in the morning.

The deceased was Mohammad Iran, 35 of the upazila, reports UNB.

Tipped off, a team of RAB 7 raided the area around 8:00am, said Major Mehedi Hasan, commanding officer of Chandgaon RAB camp.

Sensing presence of the team, the alleged criminals opened fire on RAB men, forcing them to retaliate.

After the gunfight, they found the bullet-hit body of Iran.

Thirteen firearms and a number of sharp weapons were seized from the spot, added Mehedi Hasan.
