Bangladeshi non-profit Jaago Foundation’s founder, Korvi Rakhsand, has been named as one of the four recipients of the 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Awards.

The 38-year-old Korvi, who founded the Jaago Foundation in 2007, was awarded for his work to address problems of access and quality education for underprivileged children.

This year, four individuals from different categories were nominated for the awards. The other recipients are Ravi Kannan from India, Miriam Coronel-Ferrer from the Philippines, Eugenio Lemos from Timor-Leste,

The Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation announced the names of recipients in Manila on Thursday.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation mentioned Korvi as a Bangladeshi who championed inclusive, quality education.

So far, 13 Bangladeshis have received the prestigious award, whichis regarded as Asia’s equivalent to the Nobel Prize.

Tahrunessa Ahmed Abdullah was the first among the Bangladeshis to receive the award in 1978.

BRAC founder Fazle Hasan Abed, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Prof Muhammad Yunus, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury, one of the founders of Notre Dame College, Father Richard William Timm, the enterpriser of Deedar Comprehensive Village Development Cooperative Society, Mohammad Yeasin, the founder of Banchte Shekha Angela Gomes, and the founder of Bishwa Sahitya Kendra Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Editor of the Bangla Daily Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman, Executive Director of the Centre for Disability in Development, AHM Noman Khan, and Chief Executives of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association, Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Firdausi Qadri, also received the prestigious award.

Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development founder Akhtar Hameed Khan also received the award but as a Pakistani national.
