Govt considering Shajahan’s 111 recommendations: Obaidul

Shawdesh Desk:

The Road Transport and Bridges Ministry is considering formulation of a taskforce to implement 111 recommendations, made by the committee headed by former shipping minister Shajahan Khan, to bring back order on the roads and curb accidents.

Obaidul Quader, road transport and bridges minister, on Thursday said this at a press briefing at the Secretariat adding that they would take initiatives to implement the Road Transport Act 2018 soon after ‘adjustments’  if required.

He also said that they would hold the 27th meeting of National Road Safety Council on September 5 to discuss all these issues.

The Shajahan Khan-led committee was formed on February 17 this year, at the 26th meeting of the National Road Safety Council, against the backdrop of student protests for road safety.

The protests revived after the death of a Bangladesh University of Professionals student on March 19 as a bus ran over him at Pragati Sarani in Dhaka.

The committee submitted the recommendations to prime minister Sheikh Hasina on April 28.

The final report comprised of 50 recommendations for immediate actions which were proposed to be implemented by December.

It also has 32 short-term recommendations, proposed to be implemented between 2019 and 2021, and 29 long-term recommendations, proposed to be implemented between 2019 and 2024.
