Rail connectivity with Sylhet cut off as train derails in Moulvibazar

Shawdesh desk:

The Sylhet-bound Udayan Express train with two of its coaches got derailed from the rail track resulting in closure of rail connections between Sylhet, Chattogram, and Dhaka temporarily.

The derailment occurred in the early hours of Saturday (May 20) within the Lauachhra forest located in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar.

Around 50 individuals were reportedly injured based on initial reports, which were confirmed by Uday Kushal Singh, the Station Master of Srimangal Railway Station.

Alamgir Hossaini, a passenger on the train, explained the derailment as severe, with the incident taking place amidst the Lauachhara Sanctuary.

Station Master Uday Kushal Singh stated that the Udayan Express train, departing from Chattogram, derailed within the Lauachhra forest at around 5 am. It is believed that a storm during the night caused a tree to fall onto the railway line. As the moving train collided with the tree, two coaches, along with the engine, derailed. Rescue trains from Kulaura and Akhaura are en route to the location following the accident. However, the estimated time for the reopening of the rail link remains unknown. Consequently, the railway connection between Sylhet and the rest of the country has been disrupted.
