A Satkhira court on Tuesday sentenced former BNP MP Habibul Islam Habib and three others to life term imprisonment in two cases filed over the 2002 attack on Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s convoy in Kolaroa.

Forty-four others were sentenced to seven years in jail in the cases filed under arms and explosive substances acts.

Satkhira Special Tribunal-3 Judge Biswanath Mondal pronounced the verdict around this morning.

Upazila Jubo Dal President Kader Bachchu, Kalaroa Municipal Jubo Dal President Arifur Rahman Ronju and former Chhatra Dal president Ripon are the three others who sentenced to life imprisonment in the caes.

Earlier, on February 4 of 2021, 50 people, including Habib, were jailed for different terms in another case filed over the attack.

On 30 August, 2002, Prime Minister Hasina, the then opposition chief, was returning to Magura after visiting a freedom fighter’s wife in Satkhira when her convoy came under attack in Kalaroa upazila of the district.

Hasina survived the attack relatively unscathed but many Awami League leaders and workers were injured along with some journalists.
