Theatre troupe BotTala brought to the stage its production titled Shokhi Rongomala at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Tuesday.

Shokhi Rongomala, based on Shaheen Akhtar’s novel of the same name, has been adapted by Samina Luthfa Nitra and Soumya Sarker.

The play, directed by Mohammad Ali Haider, was staged on the fourth day of Aly Zaker Natuner Utsab.

The play revolves around a Zamindar named Rajchandra Chowdhury, his wife Phuleswari Rai and sex worker Rongomala.

Rajchandra becomes physically intimate with Rongomala and Phuleswari also takes fancy to Rongomala.

When Rongomala is killed, Phuleswari protests against the killing and the play moves forward.

Kazi Shams Tathoi played the character of Phuleswari, Shahinur Akter Prity played the character of Rongomala and Mahbub Masum played the character of Zamindar Rajchandra Chowdhury in the play.

Besides, Kazi Roksana Ruma, Oleander Rima, Priyam Archi, Muslima Khatun, Mizanur Rahman and others played different characters in the play.

‘I was moved by the character of Rongomala after reading the novel. Besides, Phuleswari left an impression on me for her selfless love for Rongomala,’ said Mohammad Ali Haider.

Aly Zaker Natuner Utsab is featuring five new plays produced by theatre troupes, namely Hridmoncho, Theatre Factory, BotTala, Tarua and Prachyanat.

Mongoldeep Foundation has provided incentives to theatre troupes for producing the plays.

Theatre troupe Tarua will premiere the play titled Adam Surat, written and directed by Bakar Bakul, at the Experimental Theatre Hall on Wednesday.

The festival will conclude with theatre troupe Prachyanat staging the premiere show of Achalayatan, written by Rabindranath Tagore and directed by Azad Abul Kalam, at the National Theatre Hall on January 26.
