60 injured as AL clash with BNP in Khagrachari, Jhenaidah

At least 60 people were injured as the ruling Awami League and activists clashed with the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party activists in Khagrachari and Jhenaidah during Victory Day celebration.

New Age correspondent in Khagrachari quoting district BNP assistant office secretary Nipun Ahmed reported that AL activists attacked Manikchari BNP office while BNP leaders and activists were preparing for Victory Day rally.

At least 40 people, including upazila BNP president Enamul Haque and Juba Dal leader Manju Miah, were injured in the attack.

Several injured BNP leaders and activists were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Nipun said that the office was also attacked by AL activists earlier on Thursday night. The attackers vandalised furniture and office rooms.

AL activists also attacked Mohalchari upazila BNP’s Victory Day rally in the same district.

At least 10 people, including the upazila BNP president Anower Hossain, were injured in the attack, said BNP leaders.

District BNP general secretary MN Absar alleged that police remained silent during the attacks.

He demanded immediate arrest of the attackers.

Manikchari police officer-in-charge Shahnur Alam said that he heard of the incident but unaware of how many people were injured.

Mohalchari police officer-in-charge Harun or Rashid denied the allegation and said that Victory Day was celebrated at the upazila peacefully.

Khagrachari district AL general secretary and mayor Nirmalendhu Chowdhury denied the allegations and said, ‘BNP conducted the attack and vandalism to create panic,’ he said.

New Age correspondent in Kushtia reported that at least 10 people were injured in a clash between AL and BNP at Muktijoddha Complex under Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah on Friday.

According to police and local people, leaders and activists of BNP, Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal gathered at Kullapara and brought out a procession marking Victory Day’ in the morning.

A clash ensued between the leaders and activists of the ruling AL and the BNP when the opposition party procession was going to the Muktijoddha Complex, Kaliganj police station officer-in-charge Abdur Rahim Molla said.

The two groups, at one stage, swooped on each other with sticks and bricks that left ten people of the both groups injured, he said.

Local people rescued the injured from the spot and took them to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Jhenaidah Swechchhasebok Dal vice-president Shaiful Islam said that a group of AL activists suddenly carried out the attack on them while they were going to Muktijoddha Complex to place wreath at Shaheed Minar.

Denying the allegation, Kaliganj municipality AL unit organising secretary Ashraful Alam said that none of their leaders and activists were involved in the incident.

BNP activists swooped on each other over their internal political dispute, he claimed.
