UN for security of life in political rallies in Bangladesh

Shawdesh Desk:

United Nations resident coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis on Tuesday said that it was a concern that people were being injured and killed in recent political rallies in the country.

The UN official said that she had talked to the home minister and security forces as well about what could be done to protect lives of people in such political events.

‘It is obviously a concern that people are being injured and killed in recent political rallies. Holding political rallies is a democratic right,’ she said at the DCAB Talks at the National Press Club.

Responding to a question, she underlined the need for initiating dialogues to resolve political crisis over the upcoming general elections.

She, however, said that the UN currently did not have the mandate on elections in Bangladesh.

It was up to the government to decide about it, Gwyn Lewis added.
