Chinese, Bangladeshi artistes stages Tagore’s Chitra, Rath Yatra

Chinese and Bangladeshi theatre artistes staged Rabindranath Tagore’s two popular plays ‘Chitra’ and ‘Rath Yatra’ at Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Sunday.

Artistes from Peking University of China staged Tagore’s ‘Chitra’ at 4:00 pm which has been translated into a Chinese version by Pan Ayuan and directed by Hou Jue.

Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore exposed the play in 1892. It was an adaption from Mahabharata and centers upon the character of Chitrangada, a female warrior who tries to attract the attention of Arjuna.

Tagore’s another popular play ‘Rath Yatra’ was also staged by Loko Natya Dol at 6:00 pm which was directed by BSA director general Liaquat Ali Lucky.

State minister for Ministry of Cultural Affairs KM Khalid, acting secretary of cultural affairs ministry Dr Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal were present as guests. They praised the initiative and performers.

The event is a collaboration of Chinese Embassy, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Peking University’s Department of Afro-Asian Languages under its School of Foreign Languages, Dhaka University Theatre and Performance Studies department along with Bangladesh-China Friendship Center.

The play ‘Chitra’ was also staged on Saturday at TSC Theatre of Dhaka University by the Peking University drama team.

‘The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka has taken the initiative as a part of Chinese Culture Month-2019. The aim of the programme is to introduce the works of Rabindranath Tagore and Bangladeshi culture with Chinese students. This kind of show will help to grow the mutual understanding and cultural exchange of both China and Bangladesh’, said a press release.
