Dengue kills 5 more people, hospitalises 873 others in Bangladesh

At least five more people died of dengue in the past 24 hours across Bangladesh, taking the total official death toll to 141 since January.

Of the fresh deaths in the past 24 hours ending 8:00am on Monday, four died in Dhaka city and one in Narail district, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services.

At least 873 dengue patients were hospitalised in the past 24 hours, of which, 545 were reported in Dhaka city and 328 in other places outside the capital city.

The mosquito-borne viral disease forced 38,024 people to admit to health facilities across the country, 21,932 or 57.68 per cent of total were reported in October, showing an unbridled rise in dengue infections.

Excepting October, the number of hospitalised dengue patients was 9,911 in September followed by 3,571 in August, 1,571 in July, 737 in June, 163 in May, 23 in April, 20 each in February and March, and 126 in January, according to the official data.

Of the deceased from dengue, 84 died in Dhaka city, one in Narsingdi, one in Madaripur, 38 in Chattogram, five in Barishal, six in Khulna, four in Mymensingh and two in Rajshahi, said the DGHS press release.

Month-wise, one died in June, nine in July, 11 in August, 34 in September and 86 in October.

A total of 26,016 patients or 68.42 per cent of this year’s total hospitalisation were reported in Dhaka city.

A total of 3,584 dengue patients are currently undergoing treatment across the country, of which, 2309 are in 53 private and government health facilities in Dhaka city.
