Dengue kills six more people, hospitalises 869 others in Bangladesh

At least six more people died of dengue in the past 24 hours till Saturday morning in Dhaka city, taking the total official death toll to 134 since January across Bangladesh.

In the past 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Saturday, 869 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country, of which, 481 were reported in Dhaka city and 388 in other places outside the capital, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services.

A total of 3,597 dengue patients are undergoing treatment across the country, of which, 2,279 are at 53 public and private hospitals in the capital.

At least 36,131 people were admitted to health facilities across the country this year officially, of which, 20,039 or 55.46 per cent of them were reported in 29 days of October, said the DGHS.

Excepting October, the number of hospitalised dengue patients was 9,911 in September, followed by 3,571 in August, 1,571 in July, 737 in June, 163 in May, 23 in April, 20 each in February and March, and 126 in January, according to the official data.

Of the total 134 deaths from dengue this year, 79 died in Dhaka city, one in Narsingdi, one in Madaripur, 38 in Chattogram, five in Barishal, five in Khulna, three in Mymensingh and two in Rajshahi.

Month-wise, one died in June, nine in July, 11 in August, 34 in September and 79 in 29 days of October.

This year’s dengue hospitalisation and death marked the second highest since 2000 when the government started keeping records of the mosquito-borne viral disease.

A total of 24,853 patients or 68.78 per cent of this year’s total hospitalisation were reported in Dhaka city.
