United States ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas on Thursday said that the United States wanted safe and dignified return of Rohingyas to their homeland Myanmar.

He said that the forcibly displaced people were now huge burden for Bangladesh itself.

The United States diplomat was speaking at a Meet the Ambassador event organised by Centre for Governance Studies in the city.

He said that the United States was working to increase international pressure on Myanmar for an environment congenial for return of Rohingya.

He said that the US wanted a free and fair election in Bangladesh.

Responding to a question, he said it was not their job to tell how to ensure a free and fair election.
