Young painter Md Fayez Alam Hasan said that he has attempted to capture the passage of time depicting different types of stones in his award-winning art series titled Imagination.

‘Stones are witnesses of time. We can get a glimpse into the passage of time by observing marks on stones. I paint stones in an endeavour to capture time’s passing and the evidence that can help us uncover the passage of time,’ said Fayez.

His mixed-media painting titled Imagination IV bagged the Best Painting Award at the 23rd Young Artist Art Exhibition.

‘I started working on this series during 2020-21. I am trying to highlight different shapes of stones through this series. Most of the works are abstract and show different types of stones with stories of the time etched on them. Through this series, I am trying to develop my own style as a painter,’ he added.

Fayez has created the mixed media painting, Imagination IV, using colour pencils, acrylic, charcoal and others.

‘I started creating this series using washed-out methods and with mostly acrylic colour. However, I am incorporating different mediums in this series now,’ mentioned Fayez.

Fayez started developing an interest in art and painting when he was a student of class six. He learnt art for a few years during his teenage years. He completed his graduation in painting in 2015 from the Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts.

His series titled Behula was exhibited at Asian Art Biennale in 2012 and 2016. Fayez worked on that series for nearly a decade.

‘During the initial years of my art career, I developed a keen interest in portrait painting. Behula is a real-life person. I know her and created numerous portraits of her to represent human beings,’ he informed.

‘I created her portraits with different compositions using charcoal, acrylic and other mediums. In the 2016 Asian Art Biennale, I exhibited a large 6 feet by 12 feet painting. I wanted to create a larger-than-life portrait of her,’ said Fayez.

Besides stones and portraits, Fayez also depicts natural beauty.

‘When I go somewhere, I try to capture the natural beauty of that place. I also casually paint everyday objects and experiences of lived reality. In such works, I usually use watercolours to portray my subjects,’ he concluded.
