Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Md Atiqul Islam on Tuesday said that the Bus Rapid Transit Line 3 project authorities were responsible for the fatal accident which killed five in Uttara area when a girder fell on their car.

During a visit to the project area he also said that no project works would be allowed if the safety of people’s lives could not be ensured, said a press release issued by the corporation.

Earlier on Monday at least five people were killed and two others were injured when a girder from the Bus Rapid Transit Line 3 project crashed on a car in Jashim Uddin Avenue area in Uttara in Dhaka.

The mayor said that the project would have to lift girder after securing the area and keep spare crane in cases of emergency.

‘They should have contacted with the traffic department for suspending vehicular movement during lifting girder; but they did not do that,’ he said.

He urged the project office to show the safety issues using signboards.

He also said that they would call a meeting on the compliance of the BRT project on Thursday.

The mayor said that the accident took place due to the negligence of the project authorities.

During the visit officials of the Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Company Limited were also present.
