A huge onrush of upstream river water has inundated many areas and created serious river erosion in the north-east and central regions of the country.

All the major rivers of the country are in rising trend except the Surma, which may continue in the next 24 hours, said Arifuzzaman Bhuyan executive engineer of Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC).

Water of three rivers was flowing above the danger level on Thursday while the water of other major rivers was flowing near the danger level, according to FFWC.

The Teesta was flowing 16 cm above the danger level at Dalia point, the Padma was flowing above 26 cm over danger level at Goalundo point and Gorai was flowing above 11cm over danger level at Kamarkhali points on the day.

The Teesta River may rise and the flood situation may deteriorate in low-lying places within the basin in the next 24 hours while the Jamuna River at Mathura and Aricha Point and Padma River at Sureswar point may cross the danger level in the next 24 hours, according to FFWC.

The flood situation in the low-lying areas of Rajbari and Faridpur districts may deteriorate further, it said. Local sources said huge river erosion by the current of river waters is creating additional woes to the flood-affected people.

A large number of houses, structures, trees and crops on a vast tract of land were washed away by floodwaters and strong current of rivers in different flood-hit areas.

River erosion has taken a serious turn in Dhunat in Bogra, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Faridpur and some other areas.

Around a thousand families in nine villages of Faridpur have been flooded as the Padma River crossed the danger mark at the district’s Goalanda point.

The villages that have been flooded are located in North Channel, Decreer Char and Char Madhabdia unions under the Sadar upazila.

In Kushtia, a large number of char residents in 17 villages of Ramkrishnapur union under the Daulatpur upazila have been flooded due to the swelling of the Padma River.
