Helena Jahangir was put on three days’ remand on Friday after the businesswoman was arrested from her Gulshan residence in the capital on Thursday midnight.
A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court placed Helena on the remand after she was produced before it in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the remand order after police produced her with a five-day remand prayer for interrogation in the case.
Helena was arrested a few days after she was relieved of the membership of Awami League’s women affairs subcommittee, on charges of breaching disciplines of the party.
Two cases were filed against Helena with Gulshan police station in the capital.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said at a press briefing that Helena will face multiple cases under different acts.
In a press briefing, the RAB said Helena has been arrested on charges of attempting to defame important state institutions and individuals by spreading propaganda and misleading information through digital platforms.
Addressing the press briefing, RAB Director (Media) Commander Khandokar Al-Moin said five cases will be lodged against Helena under different acts, including the Digital Security Act (DSA).
She may face cases under the Digital Security Act, the Narcotics Control Act, the Special Power Act, the Wildlife Preservation Act, and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Act, he added.
An RAB team started a drive around 8:00pm in her Gulshan residence and arrested her, Commander Moin told journalists.
The elite force took her out of her residence around 12:15am. “We conducted the raid based on specific information,” he also said.
“We seized foreign liquor, walkie-talkie, foreign currencies, casino items and deer hide from her house,” RAB executive magistrate Palash Kumar Bosu told a press briefing.
Later, they conducted another raid on the offices of Joyjatra IPTV and Joyjatra Foundation of Helena in Mirpur.
But, the law enforcers did not find any valid documents for the operation of the IP TV.
Helena, the founder and CEO of Jayayatra Television, became a member of the AL Central Subcommittee on Women Affairs on January 18.
Earlier, she became a member of the advisory council of Cumilla (north) unit of AL.
Helena has recently come into a discussion after her announcement on Facebook to form “Awami Chakrijibi League” under her leadership.
