Around 500 shanties have been burnt in an early hour fire in Mohakhali slum caused by illegal gas or electricity line.

The fire broke out at 4am of Monday prompting the fire fighters to come to the spot and start frantic effort to douse the flame.

Eighteen firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control around 7am.

Fire Service and Civil Defence DG Brigadier General Md Sazzad Hossain said the fire is likely to be caused by either illegal gas or electricity line.

The slum is totally unplanned having all combustible substance, he added.

A probe committee has been formed to detect reason behind the fire.
