The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers will be observed today in Bangladesh along with other countries across the world.
The day is being observed on May 29 every year across the world aiming to underscore the importance of maintaining global peace, pay tribute to those involved in the peacekeeping missions and honour the UN peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives in establishing global peace. Different programmes have been planned to observe the day, said an Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) release on Friday.
The programme of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers will begin with the remembrance of the peacekeepers on Saturday morning.
A reception for the relatives of martyred and injured Bangladeshi peacekeepers and a special presentation on the UN peacekeeping operations will be organised in Senakunja at 11:00am on Saturday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to attend the programme through video teleconferencing.
A ‘Peacekeepers Run-2021’ will be held in the morning where the foreign minister will be present as the chief guest.
In observance of the day, different national dailies have published special supplements and journals highlighting the importance of the day.
Documentaries on Bangladesh’s peacekeeping activities are also being aired on Bangladesh Television and other private channels.
Besides, different private television channels, including Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar, are airing special talk-shows on the occasion.
Ministers, members of parliament (MPs), chiefs of three services, lawmakers, Armed Forces Division’s Principal Staff Officer (PSO), Inspector General of Police (IGP), senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh and senior military and civilian officials, including media personalities, will be present at the reception programme in Senakunja.
