Woman set on fire by husband in Gazipur dies at SHNIBPS

A woman, who sustained severe burn injuries after her husband allegedly set her on fire on February 7, died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic of Surgery (SHNIBPS) on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Morjina Begum, 40, daughter of Badsha Mia, hailing from Yasin village in Delduar upazila of Tangail.

Meanwhile, police arrested victim’s husband Swadhin Ali, 50, son of late Haraf Ali, from Joynagar area of Sirajganj sadar upazila, in this connection.

 

Confirming the news, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Konabari Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Abu Siddique said that Swadhin used to live with his family in a rented house at Selimnagar area under Konabari police station of Gazipur City Corporation.

On February 7, Swadhin locked in an altercation with her wife. At one stage of the argument, Swadhin suddenly set her on fire, leaving her seriously burnt, he said.

Hearing Marjin’s screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and took her to a local hospital, in critical condition. Later, doctors of the hospital sent her to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic of Surgery as her condition deteriorated, it said.

Monirul Islam, son of the deceased, has filed a case with the police station in this regard, the OC further added.
