Teknaf man killed in ‘gunfight’ with police

Shawdesh Desk; A man died and three policemen were injured in a ‘gunfight’ on Tuesday when a group of miscreants allegedly tried to snatch an arrested narcotics case accused from the Teknaf police.

The deceased is Khorshed Alam, 22, while the injured policemen are assistant sub-inspector Ratan, and constables Shariful and Balram, confirmed, Teknaf model police station officer-in-charge Hafizur Rahman.

The Teknaf police arrested one Shamsul Alam, a fugitive accused in several cases including narcotics, on Tuesday night. On their way to the police station, when they reached Mithapanir Chhara area, Shamsul’s men armed with weapons attacked the police team to snatch him.

The police also retaliated in self-defence that left Khorshed, Shamsul’s brother, bullet-hit and the policemen injured.

When Khorsed was taken to a local hospital, doctors declared him dead, Hafizur said.

The family members of the victim, however, claimed that deceased Khorshed rushed to see his brother on the spot after hearing the news of Shamsul’s arrest.

The OC Hafizur said that Khorshed was shot dead during the gunfight but could not confirm who shot him dead.

‘Detained Shamsul is a top drug dealer. There are multiple cases filed against both the brothers,’ the police official said adding that the body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The preparation for filing a case in this regard is underway, he said.
