A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Saturday midnight.

The deceased was identified as Hanif Miah (45), son of Biddya Miah, a resident of Rupganj of Narayanganj.

RAB claimed that Hanif was a member of a dacoit gang.

Sources in RAB said being informed that a gang of dacoit was taking preparation to commit robbery in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area in the city, RAB members conducted a drive in the area. Sensing the presence of the elite force, the robber gang opened fire at them. The RAB team fired back in self-defence, triggering a gunfight that left Hanif Miah injured with bullet. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital were the duty doctors declared him dead.

The body was kept at the morgue of the DMCH for autopsy, sources added.
